China's Liao Guifang broke two world records in the women's 71-kilogram Group A session during the World Weightlifting Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old Chinese weightlifter snatched 120 kg, lifted 153 kg in the clean and jerk, for a total of 273 kg to clinch the gold medal in the division.

Her results in the clean and jerk and total set two new world records.

Her clean and jerk mark surpassed teammate Zhang Wangli's result five years ago.

In the total event, Liao bettered her own record by 5 kg, which was set at the Asian Championships in May.

"My first attempt in the snatch was too tight. Then I relaxed," Liao said after the match.

"I stayed focused and regarded the competition as a regular training practice," she added.

"When I came to know that I had broken two world records, I was thrilled. I will stay calm and aim for the next title at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou," she said.

Angie Palacios Dajomes of Ecuador and Olivia Lynn Reeves of the United States took the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

The weightlifting championship that runs from September 4 to 17 in Riyadh is a mandatory qualifying event for Paris 2024.
