Responding to suspected test paper leak incident in Tuesday's college entrance examinations, or gaokao, the Chinese Ministry of Education said on Wednesday that the "leaked" papers circulating online were in fact cheating attempts during the exams and malicious editing by "leakers," who tried to make the images of test papers look like they had been uploaded earlier than the actual time.

The suspected leak was found by some netizens on Tuesday afternoon after mathematics tests were finished. Parts of the test papers were seen already uploaded online, arousing suspicion that the tests were leaked.

The National Educational Examinations Authority reported to public security departments, seeking an immediate investigation into the matter.

According to preliminary investigation, a test taker in Northwest China's Gansu Province secretly carried a cell phone into the examination room on Tuesday in an attempt to cheat by taking photos of the test papers and sending them to a QQ group to seek answers.

Another test taker in South China's Guangdong Province used a malicious editing trick of "pit post" - releasing irrelevant content before the exams to occupy a post in his Qzone, a social networking platform, and then replacing it with photos he took during the tests, while the editing time of the post still appeared to precede the tests.

Another test taker in East China's Anhui Province also used similar tricks to claim that he had "made a good guess on gaokao's Chinese literature tests."

All of these behaviors do not involve the leak of the exams, the investigation report said.

For the test sites involved in this case, relevant local educational bodies have removed the invigilators and strengthened the invigilation force. The offending candidates and those who have neglected their duties will be punished in accordance with the regulations.

A record 11.93 million people trooped to examination rooms across the country on Tuesday as the annual gaokao officially kicked off. This is considered China's most important exam as it plays an important role in shaping the examinees' fate. Dubbed as a generation of the COVID-19 era, high school graduates of China this year have gone through an uncommon and challenging path in the past two years.
