Remarkable Shandong | Clay Pottery in Hejialou Village, Qingdao

In Hejialou Village, Qingdao City, East China’s Shandong Province, the making of clay pottery has a history of more than 600 years, which was selected into the list of representative intangible cultural heritage items in 2018, and the village is thus known as the “No. 1 village of clay pottery in China”.

Clay pottery can be divided into two kinds, red pottery and blue pottery; three types of usages, for daily use, for construction, and as art crafts; and more than 1,000 varieties.

According to Zhang Yongwei, the 19th inheritor of pottery of Hejialou Village and the curator of Pingdu Ceramic Art Museum, Hejialou clay pottery is made of special clay found deep underground, without any other materials added, completely made by hand and fired with firewood, and thus becomes a best green product to be given as a gift.
