In early March, Chinese plum blossoms are blooming in profusion in Jinan, East China's Shandong province, despite the chilly weather.

Chinese plum (Prunus mume, 梅) originated in the south of China, cultivated for more than 3000 years, with a wide range of uses and varieties. It flowers in late winter and early spring, earliest among spring flowers, with an ethereal elegance, thus highly beloved in China since ancient times. In Chinese culture, the flower has been endowed with multiple symbolic meanings: perseverance, hope, purity, integrity, etc. Its exact flowering period varies depending on various factors, but largely lasts from Feb to Mar, coinciding with the first lunar month. It is thus regarded as the flower representative of the first lunar month in traditional Chinese folk custom, a harbinger of spring.
