Shandong in Belt and Road cooperation: direct freight trains to 42 cities in 14 countries

On October 17, the Information Office of Shandong Provincial People’s Government held a press conference to brief on Shandong’s efforts to create a new high ground of opening-up.

According to the press conference, Shandong has achieved fruitful results in building the Belt and Road with high quality. Through the integration of “Qilu” Eurasian freight trains, Shandong has lines in operation that directly access 42 cities in 14 countries. A total of 2280 trains have been run in two years, and 1151 trains in the first 3 quarters this year, an increase of 45.5%, with an import and export value of 9.79 billion yuan.

Vigorously developing “multimodal transport”, Shandong has established a unified service platform for China (Shandong)-South Korea, China (Shandong)-Japan Eurasian international logistics channel, opened Japan-South Korea Land-sea Express, and promoted the normalized operation of swap trailer transport on China-South Korea railway and waterway combined transport, opening an international logistics channel that connects Japan and South Korea to the East and Eurasian to the West.

Besides, Shandong has innovated the development model of overseas parks, issued its “Action Plan for the Promotion of High-quality Development of Overseas Economic and Trade Cooperation Zones (2020-2022)”, explored the functions of “cooperation zone +” development, and improved industrial agglomeration and export driving effect. In the first 3 quarters, Shandong’s 13 overseas economic and trade cooperation zones saw an investment of 2.36 billion yuan, an output value of 13.72 billion yuan, driving an export value of 5.7 billion yuan.

Shandong has also explored new space for economic and trade cooperation, actively participating in the “Pearl of the Silk Road” project, innovating “Silk Road E-commerce”, and strengthening infrastructure construction and international production capacity cooperation with countries along the route. In 2019, Shandong’s import and export value, actual outbound investment, and turnover of contracted projects with countries along the “Belt and Road” accounted for 29.5%, 31.8%, and 64.4% of the province's total, an increase of 2.5, 5.1, and 4.8 percentage points respectively from 2017. In the first 3 quarters of this year, import and export value and actual investment in countries along the route increased by 10% and 92.1% respectively.
