China said on Monday that it is necessary for China and the U.S. to have candid, effective dialogue, take tangible actions to manage differences and to focus on promoting practical cooperation in various fields.

"This serves shared interests of the two peoples and meets the general expectation of the international community," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the remarks when talking about China's diplomatic achievements since this year and diplomatic priorities for the next stage.

Noting China firmly opposes the U.S. side's bullying behaviors and power politics, the spokesperson stressed that China is willing to work with the U.S. to jointly promote a China-U.S. relationship featuring no conflicts, no confrontation, mutual respect and a win-win cooperation based on coordination, cooperation and stability.

"At the same time, we must firmly safeguard China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, protect our own legitimate rights and interests, and defend major country status and national dignity won by the Chinese people through unremitting efforts," Zhao said.

He added, although some extremist forces in the U.S. are constantly causing trouble with an aim of pushing bilateral ties into the so-called "new Cold War," China's U.S. policy is always consistent and stable.

Active diplomacy amid pandemic

In the course of the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, China has followed its vision of a community with a shared future for mankind, and pursued active diplomacy, which has written a new chapter of major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics and made important contributions to world peace and development, Zhao pointed out.

The spokesperson said China's nationwide battle against the epidemic has gained major strategic achievements and joined hands with other countries to fight against the virus.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has been fully engaged in China's foreign policy, conducting head-of-state diplomacy, which has sent a reassuring message to the international community that the world should come together to address the pandemic, Zhao said.

According to the spokesperson, China has donated 50 million U.S. dollars to the World Health Organization (WHO) and provided medical supplies to more than 150 countries and international organizations.

China has vigorously developed its relations with other major countries, said Zhao, adding that China has reacted rationally to the U.S.'s unreasonable suppression.

He added that the China-Russia relationship has made new progress under the strategic guidance of the heads of state of the two countries, and cooperation has maintained as the main theme of China-EU ties.

"We have carried out all-round diplomacy with neighboring countries and cooperation with African, Arab, Latin American and other developing countries have been further strengthened," Zhao said.

China's diplomatic policies remain consistent

In the past 70 years since the founding of the People's Republic of China, China has firmly pursued an independent foreign policy of peace no matter how the international situation changes, Zhao said and added, "this has not changed and will not change."

"We are not interested in rivalry of systems, or ideological confrontation with any country," the spokesperson said and stressed that China respects the development paths chosen by other nations.

China will never seek hegemony or expansion as it develops and will neither export the "Chinese model" or ask other countries to copy the Chinese practice, Zhao said.

China will never pursue development at the expense of others' interests but China will never give up its legitimate rights and interests, he added.

The spokesperson also reaffirmed China's commitments to opening up, developing partnership with other countries and upholding multilateralism.

China takes a clear-cut stand against protectionism, firmly upholds a multilateral trading system, promotes an open world economy, and will increase aid to developing countries, especially to the least developed countries, said Zhao.

According to Zhao, China has established diplomatic relations with 180 countries and built various forms of partnerships with more than 110 countries and international organizations.

In the face of endless global challenges, China believes that unity and cooperation are the most powerful weapons of the international community, Zhao added.

China committed to building a community with a shared future

The most important thing we could learn from COVID-19 is that humanity is in fact a community with a shared future, Zhao said, adding that China will remain a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, a defender of international order and work with other nations to jointly build a community with a shared future for mankind in the post-pandemic world.

China will strengthen international cooperation in epidemic prevention and control until the world finally defeats the virus, Zhao said.

"We will actively explore the establishment of joint prevention and control mechanism with other countries, carry out anti-epidemic cooperation such as drug and vaccine research, and provide assistance within our ability to countries in need so as to stop the cross-border spread of the pandemic as soon as possible," he added.

China will, as always, support the work of the WHO and stands with the vast majority of countries in the world, resolutely abandons ideological prejudice to jointly fight against the pandemic.

Apart from ties with the U.S., the spokesperson also mentioned to continue to actively develop ties with other major countries.

Zhao said China and Russia will upgrade their comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era.

Eying for more stable and mature China-EU ties from a strategic height and long-term perspective, the spokesperson said China is willing to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with the EU.

"We are willing to actively plan and promote bilateral exchanges and cooperation with Japan in the next stage and in the post-pandemic era, striving to restore and expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and constantly inject new vitality into bilateral ties," said Zhao.

He also said China is willing to work with India to jointly safeguard peace and security in the border areas between China and India and maintain the stable and sound development of China-India relations.

China will continue to advance the signing of Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) within this year and accelerate China-Japan-S. Korea free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations, according to Zhao.

Saying China firmly upholds the victory of World War II and firmly opposes acts of historical retrogression, China will actively participate in global governance.

China will be working with partners to make the Belt and Road Initiative a model of cooperation, health and development.
