Six foreigners with Touch Shandong column went to learn carpentry and explore the charm of the integration of Chinese traditional carpentry and modern techniques at Mowumu Woodworking Studio.

According to the owner of the studio Lin Yu, all the furniture here, even the air purifier in the corner, are made by carpenter Wang Jiage.

Wang Jiage introduced the tools and materials for woodworking to the foreigners first and taught them how to make a wooden stool. Although there are various traditional tools in the workshop, such as chisels, axes, and saws, a large part of them have been replaced by modern machines.

After teaching them how to use those tools and machines, Wang taught the foreigners to make wooden stools. It sounded easy, but the first step stumped the foreigners when they started. They cannot saw the four pieces of wood the same length. Wang Jiage had to explain how to measure the wood while consider the thickness of the saw blade. Indeed, no matter how simple the wooden furniture looks, it requires the ingenuity of carpentry. After nearly five hours' study, they finally made it. “I’m so glad to be here. It’s a great opportunity for me to learn Chinese woodworking culture,” said Keith from Nigeria.

Mowumu Woodworking Studio is more like an open gathering place for woodworking fans. The studio and the tools here are free to all woodworking enthusiasts as long as they bring the wood themselves.
