A report on the physical education and health of Chinese students in the compulsory education phase, which covers primary and junior middle schools, said the obesity and low vision rates among fourth and eighth graders both increased from 2015.

The report, released by the National Assessment Center for Education Quality under the Ministry of Education (MOE) on Wednesday, found that the obesity rate among fourth-grade and eighth-grade students stood at 8.8 percent and 9.7 percent in 2018, respectively, up 1.9 and 2.2 percentage points from 2015.

In addition, for fourth graders and eighth graders, the low vision rate in 2018 was 38.5 percent and 68.8 percent, respectively.

The country also released a report on compulsory mathematics education on Wednesday, the first time China issued a report on a specific subject in compulsory education, according to the MOE.
