The 90th Qilu cargo train, a new China-Europe freight train, departed from Jinan for Budapest, Hungary on August 6, marking the official launch of the Jinan- Budapest freight train route. This is the third international cargo train route of Jinan opened this year following the routes to Moscow and the Republic of Belarus.

Thus far, Jinan has a total of five cargo train routes, reaching the hinterland of Europe and radiating 12 countries from the previous 8.

The first cargo train route from Jinan to Europe has been developing steadily since its open on August 4, 2017. This year, three new routes were launched. Statistics from Jinan Port and Logistics Office show that in the first half of this year, 81 trains were launched, carrying 65,000 tons of goods with a value of $ 155 million, up 575percent, 1,485 percent and 525 percent respectively, which exceed the sum of 2017 and 2018 in quantity, weight and value.

The cargo quality and structure have been significantly improved, from initially low value-added products such as daily necessities, garments and petty commodities to high valued-added goods including automobiles, household appliances, mechanical equipment, laser engraving machines and automobile parts. Imported products are mainly cotton yarn from central Asia and board, pulp and flour from Russia. The China-Europe cargo trains is gradually becoming a "through train" of Shandong's international logistics trade and an accelerator of the provincial export-oriented economy.

Statistics show that the ratio of the number of return trains to that of departure trains reaches 56 percent, 32 percentage points higher than in 2018. In the first half of this year, the return trains of Jinan accounted for more than 90 percent of the whole province.

Jinan will increase the number of freight trains, improve the quality of train operation, and strive to open new routes to Poland and Germany. International bulk commodities trade will be conducted, making full use of the existing freight trains. The Jinan Port and Logistics Office will strengthen cooperation with coastal ports in Shandong and develop the combined transport of sea and railway. A railway supervision station is scheduled to be built in Dongjia freight hub to expand the development space of the Eurasian trains.
