By the end of 2018, Shandong has a total of 464 natural protection areas at or above the provincial level including 45 nature reserves, 40 scenic spots, 64 geological parks, 115 forest parks, and 200 wetland parks, among which 141 are at the national level.

Six are world-class natural areas: Taishan UNESCO Global Geopark, Yimengshan World Geopark, Taishan World Natural and Cultural Heritage, Yellow River Delta, Nansi Lake Wetland of International Importance, Dongying International Wetland City.

"At present, there are still some problems in nature reserves in Shandong", said Li Chengjin, an official of the provincial department of natural resources. "On the one hand, the area of natural protection zones is generally too large and the boundary is not clear, on the other hand, management agencies are not set up as required after the establishment of the zones."

Next, Shandong will accelerate the construction of a natural protection system featuring rational layout, scientific classification, clear positioning, efficient protection and effective management. The province will also compile a development plan of nature reserves, solidly carry out the integration and optimization of natural protection zones, formulate scientific classification standards, conduct comprehensive evaluation of nature reserves one by one, rationally define the main function, boundaries and division of the protection area, and upload relevant information and pictures into the database.

At the same time, more investment will be put into the protection, management and ecological restoration of nature reserves.
