Foreigners celebrate Duanwu Festival in Jinan, Shandong

The Duanwu Festival, also often known as the Dragon Boat Festival, is a traditional holiday originating in China, occurring near the summer solstice. As the Dragon Boat Festival is approaching, both the shopping malls and families are full of festive atmosphere. Recently, more than 20 foreigners from the U.S., France, Thailand and the Republic of Congo joined in the activity organized by “Touch Shandong” column of sdchina.com to celebrate the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival together.

The activity contains two games which are land dragon boat race and zongzi grabing race. In land dragon boat race, the foreigners formed several teams at random compete in groups. Bindika Julphane, from the Republic of Congo acted as a translator during the whole event because of his high-level oral Chinese proficiency. He said that he knew about the Dragon Boat Festival when he was studying Chinese in his country, but had no idea about the historical and cultural significance behind it. Through this activity, Bindika said that he had a deeper understanding of the cultural connotation of the Dragon Boat Festival. Although our team didn’t win in the land dragon boat race, I’m still very happy to enjoy this teamwork process,” he added.

Steinley from the United States is a short-term exchange student in China. She served as the captain of the team named "Victory". although the team did not win the first place, but she felt very happy to eat delicious Chinese zongzi and have such a interesting Dragon Boat Festival in China.

Narissara, an overseas student from Thailand, said that it was the first time for her to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in China. “I had no idea zongzi was so delicious,” she said. She said that she had never heard of Qu Yuan before, nor did he know that there was such a profound history behind the Dragon Boat Festival. “In the future, I will strengthen my study of Chinese history and culture,” she said.
