Shandong Provincial Education Department announced the progress of comprehensive reform of college entrance examination at a news briefing on April 23, 2019. The news briefing answered the questions of how to adapt to the new requirements of the “3+3” plan for the running conditions of high schools.

First, classroom facilities will be enhanced. In 2017, Shandong became one of the pilot provinces to push forward the comprehensive reform of college entrance examination. In order to improve the conditions of school operation, Shandong revised the standard of running conditions for ordinary primary and secondary schools, requiring ordinary high schools to set up elective course classroom according to the proportion of one classroom for every four classes, and equip necessary teaching apparatuses and lockers for students in each classroom, so as to meet the teaching needs for optional classes.

Second, Shandong will continue to solve the problem of large class in ordinary primary and secondary schools in cities and towns. From 2015 to 2018, the province invested over 39.1 billion yuan in total to eliminate large classes in high schools, newly built, renovated and expanded 248 high schools, newly added 400,000 new enrollments, and effectively ensured the successful implementation of high school education and teaching under the new college entrance examination system. According to local plans, the province will also build, renovate and expand 27 high schools and add 35,000 new high school enrollments in 2019.
