Recently, more than 20 foreigners from the UK, Brazil, Korea, Laos and other countries went to Jinan Peking Opera Theatre to appreciate traditional Chinese Peking Opera. Four classical excerpts of Peking Opera were put on the stage, pushing the atmosphere to a new high.

The Raid against the Dragon Palace, the Dream of a Lady, the Monk Leaves the Mountain……each role in the excerpts had its own characteristics.

“Absolutely, it is very great. You see that the people really knew what they were doing. The singing was great. The acting was terrific. I mean the speed and the movements they had to do (were great) and they are learning all by heart…We have nothing like that in our country. I really enjoy it,” said He Dali, a foreign teacher from the UK at Shandong University.

Beijing Opera is the quintessence of China. The largest Chinese opera form, it is extolled as 'Oriental Opera'. Having a history of 160 years, it has created many 'firsts' in Chinese dramas: the abundance of repertoires, the number of artists, opera troupes and spectators.

The foreigners were deeply fascinated by the gorgeous costumes, dressed actors’ faces and special singing of the performance. In spite the wonderful performance, some foreigners were more interested in the live accompaniment. They went straight to the band and ask the bandsmen to teach them some skills about the dazzling musician instruments. Eunice from Uganda was drawn into the pounding beat of the drum. Like the drummer, she picked up the sticks and beat the drum along with the rhythm. She is really something because she learned so quickly.

Khubab from Pakistan said that although he has been in China for only two months, he has always been very interested in Chinese culture and traditions. “It the first time that I can see something related to Chinese culture from the close distance. I like the performance and I wish I can speak or understand more Chinese to understand the words of the performance,” he added. “But I am excited to be one of the students to participate in the activity.”

Foreigners said they were impressed with the charm of Peking Opera and expected more opportunities to further learn Chinese traditional opera.
