Shandong stands fourth place in China’s digital consumption power

Shandong has become one of the first-class provinces in digital consumption, according to the 2018 China Digital Economy Development Report released by Alibaba Group on January 29, 2019. The report shows that Shandong ranked fourth among provinces with biggest digital spending power in 2018, with Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangsu in the top three respectively.

On account of the digitalization, healthcare, men’s beauty and makeup, smart and customized products led the list of fastest-growing new consumer categories.

As the concept of digital consumption matures, Internet is growing into a new market for automobile sales. The report reveals that new car’s deposit was among the top ten consumer goods.

In addition, the digital economy is growing steadily in the Yangtze River delta, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and other areas with a high degree of digitalization, and cities in central China has also become the up-rising star in digital economy with ferocious speed.

In 2018, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong and Henan became the top five provinces with largest digital spending power while Shanxi, Hunan and Hebei ranked the top three provinces with fastest growth of digital consumption.

Last year, the constructions of digital cities has also been stepped up the pace across the country with 442 cities bringing the public urban services, such as social insurance, provident fund and life payment, onto the Alipay platform.

At the next stage, the regional connectivity is allegedly to be further upgraded to nationwide connectivity, which will better prop up the construction and development of digital China.

Owing to the development of digital economy, less developed regions are embracing more development opportunities, and huge rural consumer market has been activated which is deemed to a new engine of China’s economic growth in the future.

A heartwarming public welfare bill was also handed in the report. 427 million consumers participated in the public welfare causes through Alibaba platforms, raising more than 440 million yuan, helping more than 8.7 million people and completing more than 7.9 billion donation orders in the whole year, which makes Alibaba the largest Internet public welfare platform in the world.

The digital economy has created numerous job opportunities for the market, with 15.58 million direct jobs posted on Alibaba's domestic retail platforms in 2018. Among them, the number of jobs provided by Shandong Province ranked sixth among all other provinces in the country.
