Dumpling culture festival highlights diversity of cultures

A dumpling culture festival was held in the international students building of Shandong University recently, attracting a large number of Chinese and foreign students to take part in. The series of activities, a quiz on Chinese dumpling, international dumpling culture show, experiencing making dumplings, dumpling making contest and dumpling eating contest, won cheers and applause.

In traditional Chinese culture, dumplings symbolize reunion, happiness, welfare and health. Chinese people like to eat dumplings on important days and festivals. It is not a simple food but is endowed with a rich cultural connotations. Today, dumplings are not only the favorite food of Chinese people but also very popular among foreigners.

Lani, from Nepal, has made dumplings before, because there is food similar to dumplings in her country called momo. "We make wrappers with flour too. But the fillings are made of materials different from Chinese dumplings, and the shape of momo is also different," she said.

At the festival, Lani learned to make Chinese dumplings, communicated with Chinese friends and formed a team with them to compete in the contest. She thought it was an interesting way to understand China and Chinese culture.

"China is indeed a country with profound cultural deposits and a brilliant history", Lani said, after the host introduced the origin of dumplings. "It is amazing that a daily food has such a long history!"

"Chinese dumplings are delicious, I like to eat them," said Gertrude, from Tanzania. "We have similar food known as Samosa in Tanzania. But there are differences. The fillings of Samosa are cooked and then stuffed into the wrappers." Gertrude said she had learned how to make dumplings and when back home she will teach her family members and friends to make Chinese dumplings.

Chinese student Shao Xinyi was busy in teaching her foreign friends to make dumplings at the festival. "When making dumplings together, we had some exchanges, which makes me feel that they are not remote. I feel the happiness of doing things together."
