Confucius family relics revealed to the public

The Confucius Museum in Qufu, Shandong Province began trial operation on November 26, 2018. Its completion and trial operation attracted many people's attention. “I feel this museum is very high-grade with the application of high technologies. The first thing I saw when entering the hall is the sculpture of Confucius, which made me feel the breadth and depth of the Confucian culture,” a tourist said in an interview.

The Confucius Museum, designed by Wu Liangyong, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, covers a total construction area of 55,000 square meters. Taking the Big Dipper as the design philosophy, the museum consists of a main hall and seven branches.

“The basic principle of the construction of the museum is to make people admire Confucius through their visit. Confucius has been respected as the greatest sage and teacher, he is worth of admiration,” said Zhang Lie, who is in charge of the exhibition design, “Dialogue is another purpose for the construction of Confucius Museum. It is more about how Confucius’s ideology and culture can be well integrated into our life and explores the contemporary value of Confucius.

The museum is comprised of 3 sections. The first section, which mainly exhibits the Confucian culture, is composed of six parts: "the era of Confucius, Confucius’ life, Confucius' wisdom, Confucius and Chinese civilization, Confucius and world civilization, and the eternal Confucius ". The second section mainly displays the history and relics of the Confucius family. It is a key exhibition area specially reflecting the richness and uniqueness of cultural relics in the collection of Confucius Museum. The special exhibition hall is the third section displaying the famous inscriptions on tablet and stone reliefs of the Han Dynasty in Qufu.

"Latest advanced technologies are employed to make some of the relics come alive," said Ye Feng who is in charge of the design of digital media. For example, classic words from the Analects of Confucius -- a collection of ideas and sayings from the Chinese philosopher --can be presented with graphic stories behind them at the same time through a wall equipped with AR technology.

The museum currently has a collection of more than 700,000 cultural relics, among which more than 300,000 are files about the Confucius family, more than 40,000 classic books, over 8,000 ancient costumes, and a number of musical instruments used when paying tribute to Confucius and over 20 inscriptions on tablet. The museum is referred to as a large and comprehensive modern museum with great cultural taste and representing the essence of traditional Chinese culture.

“The relics of the Confucius Family Mansion have been kept as a secret, which has caused some inconvenience to some academic researchers,” said Kong Deyong, chairman of the Confucius Promotion Committee of Confucius descendants of the Chinese Confucius Academy. “The open of the relics will be a great turning point for the Confucius research.”
