Tai chi health center opens in Greece

A health center on tai chi, an internal Chinese martial art practiced for both defense training and health benefits, opened in Greece on Sept 15.

The first of its kind to open overseas, the center was the latest fruit yielded between Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM) and the University of West Attica (UNIWA) in Greece, six months after the two schools inked a cooperative agreement.

A group of 32 students, who will attend the various educational programs available at the center, were awarded certificates. They then put on several martial arts shows, including the baduanjin exercise, one of the most common forms of Chinese qigong, is it believed to improve health.

Experts from the two schools shared their views on the possibilities and prospects of applying traditional Chinese medicinal treatments, such as qigong, acupuncture, and tai chi, for physical and mental rehabilitation. They hoped to learn from the essential of East and West wisdoms and promote healthy development for both the mind and body.

The center will run under the guidance of China's ancient tai chi theories, which by integrating with acupuncture, moxibustion, and massage exercises, can lead the practitioners to various benefits.
