24th Games of Shandong to kick off in Qingdao

The 24th Games of Shandong Province is expected to kick off in Qingdao, a coastal city of Shandong Province on October 12, 2018.

Sui Yongjun, the deputy director of Shandong Administration of Sports, said that the Games of Shandong Province has been held for 23 times since 1950. After 60 years of development, the organizing mode and competition system have grown mature.

Games held in Shandong Province aims to promote the physical training of young people, enhance their physical health, select the reserved athletics from excellent sports teams, improve the sustainable development of the province’s competitive sports, boost the coordinated development between the mass sports and sports industry, inject impetus into the implementation of the Strategy of Constructing Healthy China and Healthy Shandong, and accelerate the construction of a powerful province in sports.

According to Sui, the 24th Games, approved by Shandong provincial government, will be hosted by Qingdao and co-organized by Zibo and Rizhao. Qingdao will host about seventy percent of all events while Zibo is to undertake twenty percent of all events, including modern pentathlon, triathlon, weight lifting, gymnastics, women’s football, handball, diving, open water swimming and so on, and Rizhao will undertake ten percent of all events, including canoeing and bicycling, etc.

This is the first provincial sport meet jointly hosted by three cities.

The opening and closing ceremonies will be both held in Qingdao on October 12 and October 20 respectively. 17 city-based delegations will participate in the 840 events of 29 kinds of sports.

The preliminary contest for the provincial games begun on March 15 and will end by the end of August. The final will begin on July 16 and end on October 20.

Statistics shows that more than 12,000 athletes participate in the preliminary contest and 9,000 athletes in the final.
