A Chinese media company has apologized and closed its official WeChat account, after it published an article with a fictional and vulgar description of a recent murder case in which a woman was killed after she hailed a car via ride-sharing app Didi, reports the Beijing News.

Ergeng, a Hangzhou-based media company specializing in the creation of video content, on Friday published an article about the headline-making May 6 incident, in which a 21-year-old flight attendant was stabbed to death by a driver who was serving customers without a proper registration with Didi. The article contained filthy language describing an imaginary murder scene that is bloody and pornographic, which has made many people feel uncomfortable. Since the piece was published on Ergengshitang, the company's affiliated WeChat platform, it has raised public indignation and condemnation.

Many online users criticized the article for utilizing a tragic story as a promotional tool to drive viewing traffic, as well as afflicting harm to the victim and her family for a second time. Some have called Ergengshitang an "inhumane media organization" that has reached the moral bottom line.

The Zhejiang Provincial Cyberspace Administration on Saturday contacted Ergengshitang regarding its vulgar article, asking the company to remove the content.

In response to the scandal, Ergeng's founder Ding Feng made a public apology on Sunday, admitting the company's mistake has "created harmful social effects." Ding promised in his apology letter that the company would permanently close Ergengshitang accounts on all its platforms and will remove Li Ming, founder of Ergengshitang, from all his posts within the company. The controversial article has since been deleted and the Ergengshitang WeChat account shut down.
