Chinese President Xi Jinping is calling on the US and Chinese sides to keep the lines of communication open to deal with trade issue.

He's made this call as part of a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday.

President Xi Jinping says China and the United States should maintain high-level exchanges and communications at all levels.

Underscoring the principles of mutual respect and mutual benefit, Xi Jinping says the two sides should focus on cooperation and work to manage their differences to promote the stable development of bilateral ties.

He says economic and trade cooperation plays the role of ballast and propeller in China-U.S. relations.

He also says he's been told the two sides had open, efficient and constructive negotiations last week in Beijing on trade issues.

For his part, Trump has reportedly expressed his willingness to keep up with practical cooperation and handle the U.S.-China trade issues.

They've both agreed to keep in contact with one another on trade.

They've also talked about the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Xi Jinping has urged Trump to work toward trying to build up a level of trust with North Korea, telling the US President that negotations are the best way to bring about a political solution on the Korean Peninsula.

The Chinese President has also asked Trump to put himself into Pyongyang's shoes for a moment when it comes to the North's security concerns.

Voicing support for the planned meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Xi Jinping has pledged to keep involving the Chinese side in anyway it can to realize denuclearization.

For his part, Trump says he also plans to keep in close contact with Beijing as the peace process on the Korean Peninsula moves forward.
