Chinese citizens are now able to pass through Australian customs by way of high-tech facial recognition, reports chinaqw.com.

Chinese travellers who are 16 years and older and hold an electronic passport are eligible for the new service.

Applicants will need to scan their faces through a mobile APP provided by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Once their information has been confirmed, users will no longer need to show their passports at baggage drop-off, border processing, security screening, airport lounges and boarding gates.

China is one of 15 countries being given the option of facial recognition customs clearance.

China now stands as Australia's largest source of foreign travellers, surpassing New Zealand this past year.

Airports in several other countries, including Canada and New Zealand, also provide so-called 'smart gate' customs clearance for Chinese citizens.
