The world's largest "Chinese knot" kite succeeded in flying at the International Kite Flying Field in Weifang, Shandong province on April 15.

Shaped like a Chinese knot, the main body of the kite is 51 meters wide and 51 meters high. It exceeds 2,600 square meters, equivalent to the size of two standard swimming pools or seven basketball courts.

According to an interested bystander, the kite would have a weight of more than 1,000 jin (500 kilograms) once airborne, taking into account the effect of the wind. The strain is enough to carry a light truck into the sky, and it is totally impossible for a single person to control the kite-rope. Ten individuals were required to control the kite and ensure safety.

With no skeleton, the kite was made of imported sturdy and wear-resisting nylon fabric, and tough Dyneema lines of high quality. The total amount of fabric used was 15,600 meters and the length of lines was 30,000 meters. It took 16 days to build the kite, which is several times that required for ordinary kites.

The giant kite was flown by a professional kite flying team. Verifiers from Carrying the Flag World Records present at the scene declared that this kite was the world's largest "Chinese knot" kite, and awarded a medal and certificates. Thousands of guests witnessed the birth of the world record.
