According to Shandong provincial fishery department, Shandong enacted a seasonal fishing moratorium policy from this year in the Yellow River to protect its ecological environment and fishery resources. The moratorium starts from April 1 to June 30, among which the fishing moratorium in Dongping Lake is even longer starting from April 1 to August 31.

The moratorium covers the main stream of the Yellow River in Shandong, Dongping Lake, Jindi River and the main stream of Dawen River. During the moratorium, no fishing is allowed in these water areas.

In accordance with China's fishery law, if the natural fishery resources of the Yellow River shall be harvested due to the need of scientific investigation or domestication and breeding activities, it must be approved by the departments of fishery administration at or above the provincial level.

During the moratorium, the fishery department will investigate and strictly punish fishing practices violating laws and rules, mainly the use of traps and nets in deep waters, electricity, poisons and explosives.

At the same time, the fishery department will hold various trainings to enhance their overall quality and professional skills. Timely communication will be conducted between fishery department and civil administration department to endeavor to endow fishermen with right of subsistence allowance and guarantee their basic living needs during the moratorium.
