Foreigners make rice dumplings to celebrate Lantern Festival

Three foreigners from Russia, Italy and Colombia respectively learned to make tangyuan, or sweet rice dumplings in Shenghua community in Dongying, east China’s Shandong province on Feb 28, 2018.

Invited by Touch Shandong column of sdchina.com, they made tangyuan together with local residents to celebrate the upcoming Lantern Festival.

As an important traditional festival, the Lantern Festival is celebrated across China with folk activities including making tangyuan, appreciating lantern shows, guessing lantern riddles and playing yangko.

Sweet rice dumpling is a special food designated for the Lantern Festival, which is called yuanxiao in northern China and tangyuan in the south.

“I have eaten dumplings but have never tried sweet dumplings. Today, I will definitely have some,” said Valerie from Colombia. This is the second time that she has participated in this kind of experience activity organized by sdchina.com.

Kneading dough, mixing fillings and rolling dough into a ball, instructed by local residents, the foreign friends quickly mastered the skill of making rice dumplings. “It looks simple. But a lot of skills need to be mastered in order to make a nice rice dumpling,” said Anastasiya, from Russia.

Giacomo, from Italy, arrived in China several months ago but he is extremely interested in China’s folk culture and food. “I have read books on how to make rice dumplings. It is really amazing to make them by myself,” he told the reporter.

“Dongying is my lucky city”, Giacomo said when he mentioned his love story. He found his love, Anastasiya, in Dongying.

In a moment, a good deal of rice dumplings were made. The fragrance of glutinous rice permeated the air when rice dumplings rolling up and down in the boiling water. Seeing this, the foreigners couldn't wait to have a taste of the rice dumplings made by themselves.
