The Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection says country's fight against air pollution produced dramatic results last year.

The average density of PM10 in prefecture-level cities and above was 75 micrograms per cubic meter, about 22 percent lower than that in 2013.

The average density of PM2.5 in Beijing and its neighboring Tianjin Municipality and Hebei Province decreased by about 40 percent compared with 2013.

Liu Bingjiang, head of air quality management department of Ministry of Environmental Protection, says the overall air pollution control in China is still a work in progress

"The key area for pollution control will be Beijing, the neighboring Tianjin Municipality and Hebei Province and the surrounding areas, because these areas used to suffer serious air pollution. The major direction would be coordinated prevention and control. We will focus on tackling such problems as industrial structure adjustment, energy structure and traffic structure."

Liu says Beijing has made addressing motor vehicle emissions a focus of this year's air pollution control work.

Coal consumption now makes up less than 10 percent of the city's energy mix, and over 80 percent of Beijing's industries are in the tertiary sector.

He also says China will target irregular enterprises that are not in line with local land and industrial planning, and violate environment protection rules or operation regulations.

According to Liu, the country is working on a three-year plan to win the battle for cleaner air, focusing on eliminating outdated production capacity, controlling coal consumption and encouraging more railway transport in logistics.
