Over 830,000 people get rid of poverty in Shandong last year

A total of 832,000 impoverished people in Shandong were lifted out of poverty in 2017, with the poverty rate falling to 0.3 percent from 7.2 percent, according to a press conference held on Feb. 9, 2018.

At the end of 2016, 482,000 poverty-stricken people were senior citizens over 60 years old, accounting for 53.8 percent of the total number of the poor people in Shandong; 412,000 people living in poverty also suffered from illness while 93,000 had disabilities.

Besides the full implementation of policies including the basic medical insurance, critical illness insurance and medical aid, Shandong invested 279 million yuan to buy insurance for 2.424 million people living in poverty last year. The insurance contains medical commercial supplementary insurance, accident injury insurance and family property insurance. Insurance claims worth of 352 million yuan have been settled, benefiting 231,800 impoverished people.

Shandong also vigorously pushes forward poverty alleviation in the sector of education, providing funds to students with financial difficulties covering education from preschool to higher education. Students in impoverished areas are ensured of receiving quality education, and what is more important, their destiny may change through education. Last year, 404 million yuan was allocated to assist 156,800 students in poor families.

Dilapidated houses of 48,500 poverty-stricken families were renovated in 2017. The relocation of impoverished population was pushed forward with an investment of 1.928 billion yuan. Thanks to this, 4,131 poor people have moved into safe houses.

To tackle the problem of elderly care in the distressed areas, Shandong province has taken comprehensive measures including neighborhood assistance, volunteer service, combination of medical care and treatment as well as material supply. 14,551 nursing assistants have been employed to take care of 92,900 poor elderly people.
