A Chinese company has been forced to apologize for producing cartoons featuring iconic cartoon figures in sexual or violent scenarios, and then uploading them to domestic video websites, including Tencent, iQIYI and Youku.

Guangzhou Yinjun Trading Co. Ltd. published a statement Monday evening, saying it apologizes for the videos, and is asking for forgiveness from parents.

The Guangzhou-based company said in order to grab people's attention and get good ratings, the team had made the videos by using iconic cartoon characters in sexual and violent situations. "However," the company said, "we ignored the harmful influences on kids brought by these horrible-themed clips."

The company used iconic cartoon characters such as Peppa Pig, Elsa and SpongeBob in sexual and violent situations.

The National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications has launched a nationwide campaign to crack down on the harmful videos, and has ordered video sites to clean up the offending cartoons.

Beijing authorities also asked search engines to block related keywords.
