New data from Chinese authorities show the country saw major air pollutants plummet in 2017.

The average density of PM2.5 in 338 cities nationwide monitored by the Ministry of Environmental Protection stood at 43 micrograms per cubic meter last year, down 6.5% year on year.

At the same time, the level of PM10 in the same cities dropped to 75 micrograms per cubic meter, 5.1% less than in 2016.

In Beijing, PM2.5 declined 20.5% year on year, bringing the index down to 58 micrograms per cubic meter.

In 2013, the State Council ordered Beijing authorities to reduce the city’s PM2.5 level from the 90 micrograms per cubic meter at the time to around 60 micrograms per cubic meter by the end of 2017.

A broader region including Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, known for its bad air quality, saw a 9.9% drop in its PM2.5 density through 2017.

However, the environmental authority notes that Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital of Hebei, still saw the worst air quality index in China throughout the year.

Haikou, capital of the southern island of Hainan, is said to have topped Chinese cities with best air conditions.

During China’s Central Economic Work Conference held late last year, fighting against pollution was listed as one of the three battles the Chinese government aims to win over the coming three years.

Chinese authorities started collecting an environmental tax earlier this month, bidding farewell to a pollution discharge fee which had existed in the country for nearly 40 years.
