Taijiquan, or Tai Chi, is one of the national intangible cultural heritages, which is based on the concept of Yin and Yang. Though originally conceived as a martial art, it is also typically practiced for a variety of other personal reasons: competitive wrestling in the format of pushing hands (tui shou), demonstration competitions, and achieving greater longevity. As a result, a multitude of training forms exist, both traditional and modern, which correspond to the aims with different emphasis.

Chen-style Tiajiquan is the oldest and parent form of the five traditional family styles, with strong practicality in actual combat. Four foreign students studying in Shandong University arrived at Jinan Zhengli Chen-style Taijiquan Club to experience Taiji Sword, one of the important versions of Tai Chi.

Zhang Zhengli, the 20th inheritor of Chen-style Taijiquan, was responsible for teaching the foreigners in this activity. Zhang first introduced the origination and basic frames of Chen-style Tai Chi, as well as the sword used in this martial art. Then he handed out a different sword to each foreigner according to their arm strength. Practice is a better teacher of learning. Zhang did not show the foreigners any teaching video; on the contrary, he displayed the forms and skills of Taiji Sword himself and let them follow his movements.

Though they know little about this Chinese traditional martial art before, the four foreigners showed great interest in it and took it seriously. Naeem from Afghanistan, Whose Chinese name is Haotian, said he liked the Chinese martial art before he came to China. “Just like China, my country is a multinational state with diverse culture,” he added. “I like China, because of her gorgeous culture!”

Bat-Ochir and Mandakh, both from Mongolia, have studied Chinese language in Shandong University for almost one year. They said they are very glad to have such an opportunity to learn more about Chinese martial art.

After the activity, the students expressed their gratitude to Sdchina.com and Teacher Zhang Zhengli for providing them this opportunity to learn Tai Chi and Chinese martial art.
