Recently, seven students from different countries of Shandong University came to Jinan No. 3 Vocational School to make dumplings to celebrate the Chinese Dongzhi Festival.

Before learning to make dumplings, teachers of the vocational school taught the foreigners about the tea art. After that, Kunal from Nepal and Lucrezia from Italy tried to make tea for everyone.

“I think this activity is very meaningful to me. I like Chinese tea very much and I’ve bought many tea cups but I don’t know how to use them,” said Lucrezia. “I learned a lot today.”

Then they started to learn make dumplings in the cooking classroom. The foreign students were divided into several group and taught by students of the cooking class. As the old saying goes, “Dumplings are for the Winter Solstice Festival while noodles should be eaten in the Summer Solstice Festival.” Eating dumplings has been the most characteristic dietary culture in the celebration of the Winter Solstice Festival, or Dongzhi Festival in Northern China.

Kim Juim, from South Korea, said eating dumplings is also a tradition for Korean, and traditional thought holds that women will give birth to pretty daughters if they can make good-looking dumplings. Kim even asked teachers to teach her make dumplings with different styles and she did very well.

Other foreigners also made delicious dumplings which were put into the pot to boil later. They were so proud of their masterpieces and claimed the dumplings made by themselves taste good.

As we all know, the Dongzhi Festival is one of the important traditional festival celebrated by Chinese. People often eat dumplings to celebrate the day. Traditionally, jiaozi were thought to be invented during the era of the Eastern Han by Zhang Zhongjing who was a great practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine.
