The Dongzhi Festival or Winter Solstice Festival is one of the important festivals celebrated by the Chinese People during the Dongzhi solar term on or around December 22. Traditionally, the Dongzhi Festival is also a time for the family to get together. In northern China, people typically eating dumplings on the day while southerners eating Tangyuan or balls of glutinous rice.

On December 20, seven foreign students, at the invitation of Sdchina.com, went to Jinan No.3 Vocational School to learn to make dumplings and taste Chinese tea to celebrate the upcoming Dongzhi Festival.

For health nuts, nothing is better than drinking tea in cold winter. The tea art specialist Xu Yuanyuan told the foreigners the connotation of tea-drinking in winter as she displayed the skill of tea making. Winter is the best season for drinking tea to warm our stomaches, as she said.

“Chinese tea art has a unique lingering charm and make us feel so close to it,” said Lucrezia Goldin from Italy.

After tea they began to learn how to make dumplings in a culinary classroom. “I have eaten dumplings for many times. It’s really tasty. But I am still a green hand in making them,” Nestchanok Posuwan from Thailand told the journalist.

Kneading dough, preparing fillings, rolling the wrappers and folding the edges together…not one of these processes is easy for the foreigners, they were, nevertheless, eager to have a try. However, when they really started to make it, the outcome was not so desirable. Some always pressed their hands when rolling the dough and some cannot put both ends of wrapper together.

It really takes a long time for the foreigners to master the skill of making dumplings. Even so, most of them finally can make decent dumplings themselves. The last step is boiling the dumplings. When the water is boiling, they put the dumplings one by one in the pot. At this time, all people were waiting for the delicious dumplings. “Dumplings are delicious food, but dumplings made by myself taste better!” Monica Piazza from Italy said as she ate the boiled dumplings.

They were very satisfied with their dumpling “masterpieces” and expressed their thanks to “Touch Shandong” Column for providing them with such a good opportunity to experience traditional Chinese culture.
