Chinese Vice Premier Meets with Scotland's First Minister during UK Visit

Chinese Vice-Premier Liu Yandong met Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon in Edinburgh on Tuesday, during the first leg of a four-day official visit to the United Kingdom.

The two leaders discussed topics covering gender and social equality, higher education, and cultural connections between China and Scotland. The Vice Premier said that recent years have seen a steady growth of the economic and cultural relations between the two countries and China looks forward to further bilateral cooperation with Scotland in areas such as business investment, education, clean energy, and innovation industries. Nicola Sturgeon shared the same positive view on bilateral development by saying that China is an important export market for Scottish products which not only include food and drink but also pharmaceuticals and financial services. The two countries have strong cultural links and Scotland continues to draw significant numbers of tourists from China.

During the meeting, the two parties agreed that education is one key area China and Scotland could build on in the years ahead. According to the Scottish First Minister, increasing numbers of Chinese students are choosing to study in Scotland and 18 of Scotland's higher education institutions have academic and research links with their counterparts in China.

The Vice Premier also received an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of Edinburgh in recognition of her continued efforts in promoting the cultural exchange and understanding between China and the UK.

Following her stop in Edinburgh, the Vice Premier traveled to London for the fifth-annual UK-China High-Level People-to-People Dialogue to be held later this week. It is the highest level Sino-UK dialogue to be held in Britain this year and coincides with the 45th anniversary of the establishment of the China-UK ambassadorial diplomatic relations.
