The map shows the level of county scientific development of Shandong in four colors, with red representing the highest level, followed by orange, light green and dark green.

On Dec. 3, Shandong University Institute for Studies in County Development released the rankings of county scientific development of Shandong from the perspective of five concepts for development. Rongcheng City dominated the top of the list with a score of 97.63, followed by Longkou City with a score of 94.26 and Jimo City with a score of 88.73. Four out of the top ten cities are from Qingdao, which are Jimo (third place), Jiaozhou (fourth place), Pingdu (eighth place) and Laixi (tenth place).

According to Huang Kainan, dean of Shandong University Institute for Studies in County Development, the rankings were rolled out for county-level cities but exclude districts of prefecture-level cities. The survey and result of the rankings came out before Jimo City was turned into the district of Qingdao, that’s why it is included.

In terms of the sub-index, Longkong City scored the highest in innovation and sharing indexs while Jiaozhou City ranked first in the index of coordination. Guangrao County took the crown in green development while Rongcheng City claimed the title of opening up. Note that quite a few counties of western Shandong perform very well, though the overall development level of western area is inferior to the eastern area.

From the view of areal distribution, the rankings show the unbalanced scientific development between eastern and western area as well. Obviously, science is less developed in the cities of western margin of Shandong, like Dezhou, Liaocheng and Heze, and cities of Yimeng region of Shandong, basically Linyi and Rizhao.

In addition, there still is a gap between the scientific development of Shandong and that of other economically developed provinces. However, this also means Shandong enjoys a huge development potential in science.

Huang said the research group, for obtaining the rankings result, has set up the first-class indicator, 19 second-class indicators and 51 third-class indicators according to the five development concepts, namely, innovation, coordination, green development, opening up and sharing.

Here are the overall and sub-divisional rankings of Shandong’s county scientific development:
