The “Touch Shandong”: One Hundred International Students Discovering Shandong event came to end on Nov. 25, 2017 in Weifang, east China’s Shandong province. In three days, nearly one hundred students from over thirty countries visited Zibo and Weifang to get a closer look at the scientific and technological progress Shandong has made and the unique charm of Shandong culture.

Zhoucun Ancient Town is an unique ancient architectural complex of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in Shandong, which is rare in the area north of the Yangtze River. International students were welcomed by lion dance and yangko with distinctive local features. They were impressed by this fascinating oriental folk art. Daqiq from Afghanistan grabbed the ball thrown by a young lady and experienced the ancient Chinese wedding ceremony as the groom.

Overseas students got a thorough understanding of the 74-year old Shandong Xinhua Pharmaceutical Co.,Ltd. in Zibo. “I have never thought of visiting a pharmaceutical company in China,” said Jeong Jiyeon, a foreign student from South Korea, adding “Through this visit, I understand how medicine is produced and packed. It is really amazing. What an unforgettable experience! ”

In Raza’s view, the science and technology museum of Weichai Holding Group Co., Ltd. was fantastic. Here, he learned about the development history and the strategic process of Weichai’s global and international development. Over the years, Weichai has developed westwards along the Silk Road through successful acquisition and reorganization of world famous corporations including French Baudouin Moteurs, German Kion and Italian Ferretti. “The things that attract me most in the exhibition hall are the yacht and F1 automobile race produced by Weichai. It is really beyond my imagination that Weichai can produce such cool things,” he said.

Yangjiabu, the birthplace of Weifang Kite, boasts a long history in kite-making. Together with Tianjin Yangliuqing and Suzhou Taohuawu, they are known as the three major production places of woodcut pictures in China. Rabby from Bangladesh said he had visited a number of countries and seen different kinds of kites but he saw more in Yangjiabu. “As a major of aircraft engineering, I am very interested in the reason that a kite can fly in the sky. I now understand the reason after witnessing the whole process of kite-making here,” he added.

The vegetables in Shouguang vegetable high-tech demonstration garden are cultivated with modern agricultural technologies. They, in various colors and different shapes, are actually different from what you have seen in daily life. Overseas students were deeply attracted by these vegetables and fruits.

The “Touch Shandong" event was hosted by the Information Office of Shandong Provincial People’s Government and Shandong University, and co-organized by sdchina.com, in a bid to promote Chinese culture and contemporary Chinese values as well as to showcase the unique charm of Shandong from the perspective of economy and culture.
