Hanzi (Chinese characters) highlight the splendid 5000-year Chinese civilization. They have been embeded into the memory of the Chinese nation and become a cultural gene. Cliff inscriptions, the kind of characters engraved on cliffs, iare closely connected with the evolution of Chinese characters.

At the invitation of sdchina.com, six overseas students from the United States, Pakistan and Yemen recently paid a visit to Shigandang Cliff-carving Art Museum to have a close look at the ancient technique of rubbing-making and experience the beauty of the thousand-year long Chinese character culture.

The moment they arrived at the museum, the foreign students showed great interest in its fresh and elegant decoration. Cliff inscription rubbings of different shapes and sizes hanging on the wall, primitive and refined porcelains pieces placed on tables and plates, together created a feeling of tranquility in a noisy neighborhood against the warm lamplight.

Ben Dohman, from Yemen, is extremely interested in traditional Chinese culture. After college in Shandong, he continued his graduate study here. He is not only familiar with Chinese myths and legends such as The Beginning of the World and The Goddess Mending the Sky with her Hands but is also amazed by the thoughts of Lao Tzu and Confucius. When talking about Chinese characters, Ben actively worked as a translator for his friends who cannot understand Chinese. His extensive knowledge of China and Chinese culture even amazed the staff members of the museum.

Having made a few rubbings with success, he decided to take some of hisresults home, exclaiming he was so fond of them.

Shigandang Cliff-carving Art Museum, the first rock-carving art museum in China, is committed to the promotion of excellent traditional Chinese culture, especially the Chinese characters. It has developed a series of cultural products featuring Chinese characters.

The hanzi plus themed art museum aims to foster the cultural concept of “Chinese characters memory space”, said Wang Baolei, the curator,“We want to promote Shandong’s cliff-carving culture across the world and make it known globally. ”

To animate the cultural relics, Shigandang Cliff-carving Art Museum applies its character resources to daily life, developing five series of products including rubbings, tea, porcelain, silk and garments. At the same time, inspired by the Belt and Road Initiative, the museum has developed products with Chinese cultural characteristics such as the silk and tea wares that are related to the Silk Road.
