The local Railway Bureau in Shaanxi's capital, Xi'an, launched a pilot train service during the National Day holiday to meet the demands of passengers who were trying to return home, reports news.hsw.cn.

In an attempt to offer a more flexible service for people travelling within Shaanxi, the Xi'an Railway Bureau teamed up with Tsinghua University to try out a new passenger service.

Through it, passengers were able to log on to their Sino Weibo account or scan QR codes to choose the train tickets they wanted to buy.

But because the service was specialized, the train would only depart when all the spaces were taken, rather than at specific times.

The Xi'an Railway Bureau also adjusted the ratio of hard seats and soft seats, and also increased soft sleepers in response to passenger demands.

Travellers suggested ticket prices were almost the same as regular ones.

Rail Bureau officials in Xi'an suggest they might continue offering this service through peak travel periods.
