Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner died at his Playboy Mansion home in Beverly Hills in California at the age of 91, his company said Wednesday.

Hefner, known for his "playboy" lifestyle, founded the men's magazine in 1953 and built it into a multimillion-dollar entertainment empire, which includes casinos, nightclubs and TV shows.

The first edition of the magazine featured a set of nude photos of Marilyn Monroe. Hefner wanted to be buried next to her.

In the 1960s, he was charged with obscenity but a jury acquitted him after a trial.

Besides pictures of nude "playmates," the magazine is also known for quality writing. Civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was one of its high-profile interviewees.

Hefner claimed to have slept with more than 1,000 women. In 2012, the 86-year-old married his third wife Crystal Harris, who was a Playboy "playmate" in her 20s.

His "bachelor lifestyle" inevitably created widespread controversy. Some accused him of treating women as sex objects while others lauded his efforts in sexual revolution and the civil rights movement.
