The launching ceremony and press conference of the special report on “seek new development with new economic engines” was held on Sept. 11, 2017 in Jinan, capital of east China’s Shandong province. Wang Shinong, deputy director-general of Shandong provincial publicity department delivered a speech at the ceremony. Relevant provincial departments attended the ceremony including Shandong Development and Reform Commission, Shandong Economic and Information Technology Committee and the Department of Science and Technology of Shandong Province. The event was chaired by Wei Changmin, director of the Information Office of Shandong Provincial People’s Government.

The event was jointly hosted by the Publicity Department of the CPC Shandong Provincial Committee, Information Office of Shandong Provincial People’s Government and the provincial economic and technological authorities. Organized by sdchina.com, it aimed to fully display the achievements Shandong has made in the transition to new growth drivers from old ones.

"Shandong plays an active role in international competition and cooperation. The quality of its open economy is improving continuously," Wang Shinong said in his speech. The international competitiveness of Shandong has been significantly enhanced in recent years. A new pattern of opening up has come into existence featuring all-round and multi-level.

Guan Zhaoquan, deputy inspector of Shandong Development and Reform Commission made a brief introduction of the great efforts Shandong has made in the transition from old economic drivers to new ones. The GDP of Shandong totaled 6.7 trillion yuan last year, ranking the third in China. The per capita GDP reached $ 10,000. With 41 industrial categories and 197 classes, Shandong boasts a complete range of industries and has formed an industry system featuring advanced manufacturing and modern service.

Shandong leads the country in economy and industry, said Wang Xiao, deputy inspector of Shandong Economic and Information Technology Committee. The industrial enterprises above designated size reached a year-on-year increase of 7.5 percent in the first seven months this year, 0.7 higher than the national level. Shandong’s main business income amounted to 9.3157 trillion yuan, a rise of 13.1 percent, and the profit reached 525.4 billion yuan, up 12.3 percent, accounting for 13.3 percent and 12.4 percent of the country’s total respectively. "Currently, the traditional economic growth drivers run steady while the new ones develop rapidly," Wang Xiao, stressed in his speech. “It is the right time to promote the transition from the old economic growth engines to the new ones in Shandong,” he added.

Shandong has taken active measures to boost scientific and technological innovation, according to Xu Bo, vice inspector of the Department of Science and Technology of Shandong Province. The province’s invention patents authorization broke 19,000, up 15 percent from last year and ranking the 6th nationwide.

Shandong tops the nation with 17 key national labs and 36 national engineering and technology research centers, which push forward the innovation and development in the field greatly.

In the next five days, foreign and Chinese media outlets including CNBC U.S., Russia Today and Vietnam News Agency would visit Jinan, Liaocheng, Jining, Linyi and Rizhao for on-the-spot coverage. They took a close look at the efforts Shandong province has made in building the province into a national comprehensive demonstration area of the transition from old economic engines to new.
