The planting area of wheat in Shandong province amounts to 57.6435 million mu this year, an increase of 190,000 mu from last year.

Frequent rainfall provided favorable conditions for seed-sowing last autumn. The rate of timely sowing reached 84.4 percent, up 4.8 percent over the previous year. The sowing quality was much better compared with last year. With more rainfall and slightly higher temperatures in winter and spring, the growth of wheat seedlings was the best in the recent three years.

Shandong has a total of over 10 million mu of dry-land wheat fields. These fields cannot be irrigated when drought occurs. However, the soil moisture status of these fields was suitable for wheat growth thanks to the frequent rainfall. Experts predict that the output of dryland wheat is expected to increase by 10 kilograms per mu.

Last year, the outbreaks of stripe rust swept over 31.9 million mu of wheat in Shandong’s 102 counties (cities or districts), the worst since 1990. In the middle and later periods of the wheat growth, wheat in some parts of Shandong suffered drought, lodging and dry-hot wind. And during the harvest, Shandong twice underwent large-scale of rainfall, which had negative effects on the output of wheat.
