Touch Shandong: foreigners learn Lüju in Dongying

Five foreigners from South Africa, Ghana, Pakistan, UK, and India were invited to Niuzhuang Town, Dongying City to experience Lüju, a variety of Chinese opera in Shandong.

Niuzhuang Township is allegedly the place where Lüju originated. Shi Dianyuan, the father of Lüju, was born in Shijia Village in the town. People in Niuzhuang love Lüju and they perform it from the period of Guang Xu reign till now. Sometimes they even chat in the opera tune in daily life.

The foreigners, James, Sirlord, Saadi, Omar and Salman, are all male and staff members from Shandong Kerui Group. Saadi from Pakistan has been in China for almost three years. He graduated from the China University of Petroleum and now is dedicated to oil and gas industry in Dongying, China.

Apart from work, the thing Saadi do the most is enjoying the life in China, especially the Chinese traditional culture. Saadi speaks Chinese pretty good. He said learning Chinese made his life here more interesting.

Staff workers of Lüju in Niuzhuang Town introduced the foreigners the history and development of Lüju, especially its features and acheivements.

The participants said they got a lot useful knowledge about Chinese Lüju through the introduction. At the invitation of workers of Lüju in Niuzhuang Town, Sirlord, an outgoing Ghanaian, wrote an inscription “Xiao Lüju” with a Chinese brush.

After that, the foreigners visited the rehearsal rooms and learned how to perfom Lüju in costumes. Salman from India said the activity was very informative and expected for more opportunities like this.
