Shandong has the largest number of senior citizens across the country. What will Shandong do next to deal with the problems brought about by the aging of population?

Since 2015, more than fifty policies concerning the old people have been released by over ten departments of Shandong provincial government, according to a news briefing held in Jinan, capital of east China’s Shandong Province, May 24, 2017. One of the key policies is to provide at least forty beds for per thousand aged people.

It is a milestone in the process of population aging. The aged people in Shandong has hit twenty million, said Zhong Yongcheng, an inspector of Shandong Provincial Committee of Aging. This means Shandong has entered the moderate aging society.

The grim situation and rapid growth trend will affect the province's overall development in economy and society.

There is still a long way to go to tackle the aging problem more comprehensively, timely and effectively.

Shandong proposed in the 13th Five-Year Plan that it will accelerate the development of service for the aged, actively cope with the aging of population and build a friendly society for the elderly.

The scale of service for the elderly should be extended from daily care to more aspects such as spiritual wellness, psychological support, rehabilitation nursing, legal service, emergency rescue and hospice care.

Solutions to the aging problems in rural areas should also be rolled out in various forms and approaches.
