Four overseas students from Shandong University, together with journalists of sdchina.com arrived at Yuxian Primary School in Jinan, where they had a close touch of Taiyimen Kungfu under the instruction of Mr. Lin Shuji.

Lin is a successor of the Taiyimen Kungfu, an intangible cultural heritage of Shandong province.

The overseas students, Umair and Khubab from Pakistan, Alio from Djibouti, East Africa, and Malebo from South Africa, are all curious about Chinese Kungfu and know well about Chinese Kungfu movie stars.

Lin had made elaborate preparations for the coming of the international guests. He first introduced them the history of Taiyimen Kungfu via audio and video as well as photos. “Originated from the Tang Dynasty, Taiyimen integrates Shaolin Kungfu and Wudang Boxing coupling hardness with softness. Besides Boxing, it also includes knife, spear, cudgel and sword techniques,” he said.

Having finished the video of the Monkey Boxing and Drunken Boxing, Khubab put forward his question, “Monkey is not the strongest animal, why does Chinese Kungfu choose it a prototype?” “Though monkeys do not have great power, yet they are nimble and quick in movements,” Lin explained. At the same time, he showed them a short part of Monkey Boxing, which won warm applause.

Malebo said she loves Kungfu and had been to Shaolin Temple to watch the Shaolin Kungfu. She was happy to practice Taiyi Boxing with the instruction of Mr. Lin.

Having got a glimpse of the history of Taiyi Kungfu, the four overseas students started to learn from Lin. They began with a simple routine. Lin first demonstrated some classic movements of Taiyi Boxing. He also gave a detailed explanation of each movement while doing them. The movements seem to be easy,  but when the foreigners tried to follow Lin, it was really difficult to do them well. “The set of movements needs the coordination of hands, eyes and feet. You should put forth all your strength and energy while practicing.”

Mr. Lin started to correct everyone’s movements while the foreigners were practicing. “Throw your punch with strength, otherwise, you may hurt yourself”“Extend your wrist” “Pay attention to your spirit and eyes”, he said while correcting them.

All of the four students made great progress after rounds of practice. They were excited about what they had learned.

To inherit the intangible cultural heritage, Lin has taught Taiyi Boxing in Yuxian Primary School for five years. Many pupils started to learn Taiyi Boxing from grade one. Some of them can practice it very well. Taiyi Boxing is not only beneficial for the pupils’ body but also improves their attention and perseverance.

Invited by their instructor Lin, the pupils started to practice Taiyi Boxing with the foreigners. Seeing their smooth movements, the overseas students joined them actively.
