Sterling Dahlia from Jamaica, Voloshyna-Alina from Ukraine and Blanco Sieera Norma Constanza from Colombia visited Garage Rock Studio together with staff workers of “Touch Shandong” column, where they experienced Guzheng (Chinese zither), a traditional Chinese musical instrument, and was amazed at its charm.

Guzheng, also known as Hanzheng or Qinzheng, is a traditional stringed musical instrument of the Han nationality. The tone of Guzheng is elegant and with a wide range of artistic expressions. “The most common Guzheng we can see today usually has 21 strings. Nine major schools have taken shape. Playing Guzheng can cultivate one’s morality and improve our temperament,” said Miss Wang, a teacher of Garage Rock Studio.

Guzheng was originated among the common people and later introduced to the palace. It won the favor of people of different social classes and became an art appealing to all. There are also lots of famous ancient poems highlighting Guzheng.

Afterwards, Miss Wang performed a classical Guzheng music for the participants Fisherman's Song at Dusk, composing a picture of vast water in the sunset. With the integration of music worldwide, many foreign classics blend in some traditional elements of Chinese music. A Hotel California played by Miss Wang with Guzheng and Mr. Sun with guitar drew Sterling Dahlia, Voloshyna-Alina and Blanco Sieera Norma Constanza to sing along.

The foreigners can’t wait to learn how to play Guzheng. They started with a simple melody of The Roar of the Ocean. Miss Wang taught them very patiently, and they mastered the basic skills and the melody in a short time. Even though Miss Wang told them the latter half of the melody is relatively hard for a beginner, our foreign guests still want to have a try. “I can do it better with more practice,” said Norma.
