Tianheng Sea Worshiping Ritual: a 500-year-old intangible cultural heritage

Tianheng Sea Worshiping Ceremony, a unique local fishermen’s culture, kicked off as the fishing season begin recently in Jimo, Qingdao. When the Grain Rain (the sixth of the 24 solar terms) comes, fishermen in Jimo will choose an auspicious day to worship the sea and pray for safety and fortune.

The sacrificial ceremony, with a history of more than 500 years, has been listed as a national intangible heritage.

This year’s sea worship is held in three fishing villages, namely, Huanglong Village, Zhouge Village and Shandongtou Village from March 15 to 16, 17 to 19 and April 2 to 3 respectively.

The library for worshiping and fishery culture is still underway, according to Liu Dongsheng, the Party secretary of Zhouge Village. This means that local governments are moving toward behind the scenes and incline to build the economy-sharing platforms to guide fishermen to share tourism fruits while enjoys the worshiping culture.

Beside the traditional worshiping ceremony and cultural programs, this year’s ritual adds more wonderful activities like exhibitions of tourist products and snack streets. Note that the event highlights new modern elements including “Internet Plus” and “Tourism Plus”.

B&B (bed and breakfast) service has also developed into a unique regional culture stimulated by the worshiping culture. This is not only a new experience for visitors but also a good way to utilize the idle resources and increase famers’ income.

Above all, the worshiping ritual provides an opportunity for the development of culture-derived industry, which offers great support for the industrial construction of beautiful countryside.
