“Touch Shandong” is a series of experience events organized by sdchina.com for foreigners to experience Chinese traditional culture in Shandong. In the first edition of 2017, we invited five foreign students to make Chinese traditional pastry——Youxuan (油旋), a kind of clay oven rolls.

All those five girls are students of Jinan University. Jogile Steikunaite, Yana Yumaguzhina, Catalina Cervontes and Rocio Martinez, from Lithuania, Russia and Mexico respectively, major in language, while Leydis Caicedo, a Panama girl, study politics.

Knead the dough, roll out to a 15-cm-wide and 1-cm-thick strip, top with some oil and pastry, roll up, and flatten into a cake……This is the whole process before Youxuan making being baked in the oven. Five girls make the pancakes as the pastry chef explains the methods.

You may think it’s not a big deal, but it’s really not easy as you thought to do a delicious Youxuan, especially for foreigners. Jogile said the process itself is not difficult, however it took a while for them to get used to it. After some learning time, all of them can make it.

Jogile has been in Jinan for over five months and now majors in Chinese in Jinan University. Though Chinese is still a little difficult for her, she is really interested in Chinese culture and work hard to improve her spoken Chinese. “All of us really enjoyed the activity today! You know, for some of us, it’s even first time to hear about that.” said Jogile, “It is a great opportunity to know more about traditional snack of our city.”
