Shandong was known as the most dare province to give birth to a second child since the adoption of the universal two-child policy. Last year, a total of 1.77 million new babies was born in Shandong, up 43 percent year-on-year. To deal with the even larger new birth population this year, Shandong plans to add 2,300 new beds as well as 1,200 relevant medical staff. At the same time, the project of free prenatal screening will be launched across the province.

Both the new born population and the birth rate of the second child increased last year while the sex ratio at birth and the maternal and infant mortality rates declined. The maternal mortality rate dropped by 3.22 percent to 12.62 per 100,000 and the infant mortality rate decreased by 5.03 percent to 4.53 per 1,000.

A total of 39 new maternal and child care service centers were established in 2016, with maternity beds rising by 20.5 percent and 9.5 percent new medical staff added.

To improve the maternal and child health service, Shandong strives to set up 18 new maternal and child care institutions, add 2,300 beds as well as introduce 1,200 medical staff in obstetrical department, department of pediatrics and neonatology department.

This year, Shandong will start the project of free prenatal screening so as to expand the prenatal screening diagnosis, the four heredity metabolic diseases of newborns and the hearing screening.
