The transport authority in Beijing has issued the city's first operating license for an online car-booking service, since it published detailed rules on the industry in December last year.

Shouqi Limousine & chauffeur received the operating license from the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport on Wednesday morning, reports sina.com.cn.

According to the new regulations, drivers providing ride-hailing services online in Beijing must be registered to live in Beijing and possess city license plates. The majority of the drivers or vehicles that had been offering such services in Beijing became illegal with the release of the regulations.

The transport authority in Beijing allowed 5 months for the city's companies to make adjustments based on the new regulations.

In the meantime, officials with traffic authority in Beijing told the Beijing News recently that the any violations during the 5 months of transitional period will be punished as always. They added that railway stations and airports will be specially patrolled by traffic police and all the cars will be seized once they are found providing the service illegally near those places. The drivers will be fined no more than 20,000 yuan (around 2,900 USD) at the same time.

The transport authority in Beijing has received applications for operating licenses from over 10 companies hoping to provide ride-hailing services.
