Trieu Vinh HA, a journalist with VIETNAMPLUS, arrived at Shandong Hongjitang Pharmaceutical Group with the worker staff of “Touch Shandong” column recently, where he got a deep understanding of e’jiao, one of Chinese national treasures and sufficiently attracted by Chinese medical culture.

Having got the bachelor’s and master’s degree in China, Trieu Vinh HA can speak very fluent Chinese mandarin though he works as a journalist for only three months.

Interestingly, Trieu Vinh HA said he was born in the Year of Cat, according to the Vietnamese Zodiac which replacing Rabbit with Cat when introducing the Chinese Zodiac. He loves doing exercises and singing and is extremely good at playing table tennis.

Though this is the first time for him to travel to Shandong, he knows a lot about the province. In his view, Shandong is big economic province featuring profound cultural heritages. It is also the hometown of Confucius and Mencius.

Trieu Vinh HA has heard of e’jiao but this is the first time for him to have a firsthand experience of the making of e’jiao. “It is so exciting to watch the manufacturing process of the donkey-hide gelatin today. It is wonderful to have a taste the authentic e’jiao,” said Trieu Vinh HA.

A large gold pot caught the eyes of Trieu Vinh HA immediately after he entered the donkey-hide gelatin boiling workshop. Wu Xianglun, the third generation successor of Hongjitang E’jiao, was boiling e’jiao with gold pot and silver shovel.

“E’jiao made with gold and silver cookware features stable quality and more remarkable efficacy”, said Wu Xianglun, “but e’jiao made this way was only served for the royal family in ancient times”, he added.

Hongjitang resumed this ancient making method in 2016, now ordinary people can enjoy such e’jiao products. Every slice of e’jiao undergoes 99 procedures and 300 sub-procedures. The whole procedure lasts for 80 days.

Trieu Vinh HA said he will bring some e’jiao to his family members and friends when I go back home. “The e’jiao paste tastes sweet and nice”, he added, “the activity is really interesting and informative.”
