Shandong province will grant 3 million migrant workers urban resident status in 2016, reporters learned from the ongoing 5th session of the 12th Shandong Province National People’s Congress (NPC).

The migration population includes two million rural migrant workers in cities and 1.4 million original residents who live in villages inside cities or villages in the urban fringe. These population will be granted urban resident status this year and enjoy the same public services as urban citizens, according to the provincial government work report made by Guo Shuqing, governor of Shandong province on January 24.

During the 13th Five-Year Plan, Shandong targets to increase the rate of its permanent and registered urban population to 65 percent and 55 percent respectively.

Shandong will lower the threshold for the household registration for migrants from large and medium-sized cities and let them enjoy the real citizenship treatment. In addition, Shandong will improve infrastructure including parks and roads connecting towns and villages.
