The experience activity of egg-carving art conducted by Touch Shandong column of sdchina.com was held in Jinan China-Japan Heart-to-heart Communication Center on Dec. 19. Nearly ten Japanese who work or study in Jinan and over 30 students from Shandong Normal University took part in the event.
Shan Mengbo, an artist of Jinan egg-carving and inheritor of intangible cultural heritage, gave a wonderful lecture on egg-carving and showed his exquisite skill in egg carving. The art of egg-carving is an integration of techniques such as painting, carving and decoration. “It’s very difficult to carve on the egg shell because the shell is thin and fragile. Repeated practice is needed,” he said.
The egg-carving art has made a great progress in the recent 20 years. The carving techniques and skills have also been improved. According to Shan, the egg-shell carving skill has been included on the list of Jinan municipal intangible cultural heritages. A lot of people devote themselves to egg-carving and many of them live on it.
However, there is still a big gap between China and other countries in egg-carving craft and techniques. Shan calls on an all-round publicity and popularization of the egg-carving art. He hopes China’s egg-carving art will go global.
